John Cantu was often called the godfather of the
San Francisco comedy scene. As manager of the Holy City Zoo in its
heyday, he helped young comedians such as Dana Carvey and Paula Poundstone
on their way to stardom. He also wrote jokes for big-name comedians.
Earlier in his career he performed in an improv group with Robin
Williams. But Cantu will be best remembered as a teacher. Thousands of
of people attended his classes on comedy or heard him lecture on the
subject. His enthusiasm was contagious and his optimism unflagging. He will
